fiddling with a fiddler crab August 26, 2008

This photo was shot along the shore of Pundaquit in San Antonio, Zambales during a surf trip.  This was the first time I took my camera to the beach and I was actually scared sand might get stuck on it or it might get sprayed with salt water. Or at this instance, I was scared the crab might suddenly jump and scratch my lens, so I gradually inched forward enough to get a clear macro shot.

This crustacean is named for the fiddle-shaped large claw present on males. This entire group is comprised of small crabs – the largest being slightly over two inches across. Fiddler crabs are found along sea beaches and brackish inter-tidal mud flats, lagoons and swamps.

Found in mangroves, salt marshes, and on sandy or muddy beaches of West Africa, the Western Atlantic, Eastern Pacific and Indo-Pacific, fiddler crabs are easily recognized by their distinctively asymmetric claws. It is the males which boast an oversized claw or cheliped; it plays a role in courtship and signalling among conspecifics. The movement of the smaller claw from ground to mouth during feeding inspired the crabs’ common name; it appears as if the animal is playing the larger claw like a fiddle (Source: Wikipedia).

and closer still . . .

i love my reflection, although not very distinct, on the crab’s eye. :-)

maraming salamat sa lahat ng nakaalala. you all made my month day. :-)

i remember the first few random shots i took on my slr. they were all blurred and shaken. i immediately called my friend cecille and complained about the photos and told her that i don’t want an slr anymore and will trade it for a point and shoot. i also texted a photographer i met on a trip in baler and told him about my predicament. both friends, gave me kind and encouraging words that someday, i will learn to handle my camera.

i know now that it takes time and a lot of adjusting.  it will be a life-long learning experience i guess. there will always be new things to see and fresh experiences to share as long as i keep peeking on that viewfinder and clicking on that shutter.

these are the two of those first random shots i took (taken last june i think). i was pretty ecstatic when i saw the difference in the depth of field. :-)

and then this one . . .

happy weekend! :-)

what i’m listening to today: before he cheats by carrie underwood

love the beat and the snide anger in underwood’s voice. para sa lahat ng bitter. special mention to a friend whose ex-boyfriend time and time again scarred her but apparently, this smart friend ended up saying yes to ex-boyfriend’s question “will you live with me in a faraway land?” a couple of days ago. don’t get yourself tangled up in other people’s mess. you have a very colorful life ahead of you. while their’s will be bleak ang bleary. so there’s a consolation in that somehow. don’t let that shadow you. you deserve better. :-)

right now he’s probably slow dancing with a bleach-blonde tramp,
and she’s probably getting frisky…
right now, he’s probably buying her some fruity little drink cause she can’t shoot a whiskey…
right now, he’s probably up behind her with a poolstick,
showing her how to shoot a combo…

right now, she’s probably up singing some
white-trash version of shania karaoke…
right now, she’s probably saying “I’m drunk”
and he’s a thinking that he’s gonna get lucky,
right now, he’s probably dabbing on three dollars worth of that bathroom Polo…

oh, and he don’t know… ohhh
that i dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped up four wheel drive,
Carved my name into his leather seats,
i took a Louisville slugger to both head lights,
slashed a hole in all four tires…
maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats.

update on my dslr essentials: my dad bought me a tripod last weekend. yey. thanks. he’s super cool. i had a hard time figuring out the controls and it just came out naturally for him.

one last score for my gear: a circular polarizer filter. since its super maalikabok in the country i need a filter more for lens protection and of course there is the added fun of playing with effects and improving camera techniques. here’s a picture, this is a hoya cpl.

a polarizing filter removes unwanted reflections from surfaces such as water and glass.  it also makes the colors in the photo more saturated and appear more clear, with better contrast.

im adding it up to my birthday wishlist. :-)

it’s the start of the week and i hate it. hate it. hate it. i got caught in a torrential downpour and now i’m soaking wet - my jeans are wet from my knees down. i feel like i’m so tired and my week barely even started. at least i had the commonsense to bring flipflops. it would have been so much harder to run around soaking wet in heels.

come sweet sunshine. please. :-)
