finished reading my sister’s keeper by jodi picoult. a must read. i started reading thursday and finished saturday. i don’t get to finish books in days, it usually takes me a week before i finish reading but this one is a page turner. the story shows how human judgement gets clouded with emotions, how far the human spirit can endure and triumph over life’s adversities, how one can be so selfless and selfish at the same time, how far one would go for the ones we love, and how to be just human.
here’s the paperback preview:
Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate — a life and a role that she has never challenged…until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister — and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.

i went home late from work last night. and due to late night dinners, i’m also acquiring a very bad habit of going to bed right after eating. so to pass time, i flipped through channels and watched a hbo movie whose title i don’t even know. it was a movie about how a dog influenced a boy’s life while growing up.
i got teary-eyed in the end beacause it reminded me of my dog noggy. nyaha. i still miss that mutt. :-)
anyaway, i searched for the title and it’s My Dog Skip. here’s a summary from netflix.com.
Lonely, 9-year-old Willie Morris (Frankie Muniz) lives in the flea-bitten town of Yazoo, Miss. He stinks at sports and has no playmates. So, over the strenuous objections of his hardnosed father (Kevin Bacon), Willie’s mother (Diane Lane) buys him a dog that he promptly dubs “Skip.” Before you know it, Skip transforms Willie’s life: He makes friends, plays sports and develops an unbreakable bond with the spunky terrier. Based on a true story.

sometimes you wonder if the person you’re sitting next to who knows almost half of your life, who you laugh with and share stories on a regular basis is really your friend.
and then there is that nagging feeling at the back of your mind when you don’t know who to trust anymore.
and then people think they know what you are getting, where you are going but they are always wrong because they don’t know you and they really have no idea what you’re capable of.
and the sad part is you tell everyone you’re ok but you’re really not and you pretend that you are ok until you’re finally ok.
and then you calmly put it, it will pass. and i know it will, i just wish it to go away now.

Senator Juan Ponce Enrile elected new senate president
“With sincere gratitude and in all humility, I accept the responsibility and trust that the majority of you, my peers, has entrusted and reposed upon me today. Allow me this opportunity to ask you, my colleagues, to forgive my shortcomings. I am an old man who has acquired some bad habits of sometimes being arrogant, rude, harsh with my words, insensitive and impatient. Yet, you have so kindly overlooked these shortcomings, and generously chose me to be your leader.” – SJPE

currently consuming bob ong’s stainless longganisa.
missing the beach and my tan lines. missing surfing and surfer friends. the one thing i love most feels like a distant memory now.
praying for the boss to skip the 1pm hearing.

Arnis/Kali in Discovery Channel November 7, 2008

i was browsing through channels one night and i came across a discovery channel show on stick fighting. the show caught my attention because this sport is popular in the philippines. they called the system kali in the show but it is populalry known in the philippines as arnis, the trademark single stick and double stick techniques of the filipino martial arts.
i was curious where the show was shot and it did not take long before the word “tondo” and “philippines” were mentioned. the show was not shot in the most beautiful of backdrops. it even featured tondo as background of the training sessions in the show. but this is something that would make every filipino proud.
in this episode, doug anderson and jimmy smith learned the style and techniques of kali or arnis, trying their hands on knife and stick techniques and fist fighting. they trained for several weeks and in the end had to fight veteran filipino marines.
i was trying to upload a video but wordpress says the file type is not recognized. anyway, for those interested, please follow the link.
