i have a lot of overdue blog entries as usual. i haven’t blogged about my capones and anawangin camping trip, as well as my hot air balloon trip in clark. i was not able to do that last weekend as i was busy revising the anti-trust draft bill and i had several meetings this week.
i however posted the photos at my multiply site, linked on my sidebar with the category “let’s multiply”. thank you g for giving me instructions in adding widgets.
and i’ve been addicted to camera lens lately. i want to buy ,i really really want to buy a 55-200mm af-s vr lens and a 50mm f1.8 prime lens. my impulsive streak is kicking in which is not really good for my financial health.
and union bank just called, they are giving me a pre-approved card and will be delivering it soon. yay! i finally have a card after so many unsecsessful attempts/applications to almost all credit card companies. now i’m thinking if this will be good for my financial health as well. i will probably use it to buy a lens first chance i got, or not if i get to reign in this impulsive streak.
and finally, i’m thinking of creating another blog, a photo blog similar to a project 365 but i don’t know if i will be able to religiously take one photo a day. it’s still in the works, i will update when it’s up and running.

CLARK FREEPORT – 11-25-09 – According to the Tourism and Promotions Office of the Clark Development Corporation (CDC), 2009 will see even more balloons and countries participating in the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival than in 2008. At this point, it looks as if 25 countries will be joining this event, which seems to be growing by leaps and bounds each year and becoming more like a major air show than a hot air balloon event.
In 2008, only 19 balloons were flown from 13 countries; with the increased publicity of this event worldwide and on the internet, and the growing popularity of the event with Filipinos, Clark could have significantly more balloons than ever in the air this year. The scheduled date is set for February 12 to 15 th of 2009. The organizers are in the beginning phases of planning for this Philippines mega event, we will post the schedule here when it is available.
Please follow the link for the complete article and schedule of events.

recycled conversation from last night.
friend: magkano nga ang rates sa resort? paforward naman ng contact pls.
emjay: (sent a business card)
friend: kumusta ka na tagal na kitang di nakakasama ah. musta love life?
emjay: ok lang. im good. galing kami anawangin today, camping ang island hopping. love life? haha. sabihin na lang nating actively seeking.
friend: haha. akala ko active. whatever happened to %@#$%?
emjay: i haven’t heard from him.
friend: ay sayang naman. akala ko for real na yung sa inyo kahit medyo flirting lang.
i don’t even know if i flirted right. i didn’t know you were rooting for us even back then. this conversation made me remember and smile. and miss those happy days.

i’m going camping and beach bumming this weekend at anawangin.
but before that i have to:
- finish my report on the pre-need fiasco for tuesday’s hearing,
- read/review anti-trust draft for thursday’s meeting,
- read rationalization of fiscal incentives lit in anticipation of committee hearings. i received a note on this one. it says, “i will hold the staff accountable if the boss is not made aware and aptly abreast on any developments on these measures.” scary.
i want to eat pancakes for breakfast tomorrow. i will drop by the supermarket tonight (if it’s still open) to buy some.
my sisters are bugging me to watch marley and me with them. i want to but i’m going camping, so may be next week.
happy weekend everyone!

pre-need fiasco February 3, 2009

i attended a whole day meeting yesterday on the pre-need company controversies. it was a very productive and learning experience for someone without any knowledge on the workings of the pre-need industry, like me. but it was also very frustrating while listening to the non-effort of government agencies which are supposed to regulate the sector and protect the interest of the public.
a number of pre-need companies closed shop early this year and most of the pre-need companies still operating believe that they will not be able to service their obligations to planholders since yields or return on their investment is way lower than expected. but this was nothing new, in 2004 the largest pre-need company college assurance plan went bankrupt followed by another pre-need giant pacific plans.
the securities and exchange commission should have learned from this experience but nothing was done. no measures were implemented and regulation was not improved. it’s absurd to say that the problems faced by the industry caught these regulators by surprise. everyone is pretty sure they know what’s going on, they just chose to not act on it. the regulators even seem to favor and provide a lot of legroom to pre-need companies when they are a party to their own failures, employing dirty tricks thinking they could get away with it.
at the end of the day, those who suffer are the individuals who put their hard-earned money in savings for their children’s education. these are not rich people they are individuals who had to work hard for every cent they put in these educational plans. and what do they have now, nothing…
i could almost feel the dread of parents who will not be able to claim the money of their children as i will be helping my sister come june with her college tuition and expenses.

i spent last week saturday with friends. we celebrated jv’s birthday at tgi fridays, boni high. happy happy birthday jv! thank you for the treat!

birthday boy hugging his gifts
the food was good. we had pasta, chicken, fries and veggies. the nachos was very good. i don’t know the names of the dishes since i was not yet there when they ordered. but all is good. here’s a picture of the delectable food, photos courtesy of neil and his new cam.

go nachos!
we strolled along boni high, chit-chatting and taking photos until midnight. it’s fascinating how the conversation rolls from food to politics to old classmates to local showbiz gossip to politics and then back again. it’s a roller coaster conversation and i barely notice the shift from one topic to another. we had late night drinks at butch’s place. conversation continued up to the wee hours of the morning. (neil not in photo)

boni high tambay album cover
i guess it just comes easy with friends.
